How expensive is High Power Rocketry?

High Power Rocketry is as expensive as you make it. In terms of kits, the cheapest rocket kits cost between 30-40 UK pounds, and the solid rocket motors to go with those cost between 10-30 UK pounds per flight.

The most expensive kits currently available in the UK are round about the 300-400 UK pounds mark, and use solid rocket motors that would cost between 60-90 UK pounds per flight. For this money, you would have rockets of between 6 to 7 1/2 inches diameter and 8 1/2 to 9 feet tall!

Many rocketeers use what are called reloadable solid rocket motors. Thes have higher initial costs, but work out cheaper in the long run, since the casing is cleaned and re-used, and simply a propellant reload is bought to fit into the casing. Reloadable casings cost from about 30 UK pounds up to 500 UK pounds, and the propellant reloads cost from about 15 UK pounds up to 500 UK pounds.

The most expensive High Power Rocketry kits available are not surprisingly, also the largest, and if shipped in from the U.S. would cost over 1000 UK pounds, and stand over 15 to 20 feet tall! The motors to power a rocket of this size would cost about 500 UK pounds, and would also require a motor casing costing about 500 UK pounds.

After building up experience in High Power Rocketry, many rocketeers start using onboard electronics systems, such as altimeters and timers. These cost from about 50 UK pounds, up to about 200 UK pounds.
