A shred, as its name indicates, is the name given to a rocket which loses structural integrity during flight, and either rips itself to shreds under aerodynamic forces or excessive acceleration, or loses its fins (shreds its fins).

Shreds are most often encountered on minimum diameter rockets with large motors, rockets with fins which are not attached sufficiently securely, and fast rockets with lightweight airframes.
