The choice of piston or flameshield as a component of a recovery system is very much a choice for the individual. Some people prefer to fit their rockets with piston recovery systems, others prefer to use flameshields made of flameproof materials such as Nomex. There is no way to really say one is better than the other, since they both work equally well, and are both widely used by U.K. rocketeers.
